Art Classes

Classes are resuming with some covid-happy measures in place, until we hear otherwise, including hand sanitiser, wearing face coverings for set up and clear up times, not sharing equipment without sanitising it and my pre- and post- class cleaning & storage. I can still serve hot drinks and individually wrapped treats :)

sketching Afternoon

An exhibition to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the death of Thomas Gray
St Giles' Church, Stoke Poges, SL2 4NZ    21st-26th June 2021

Join me for a sketching afternoon at the church on Monday 21st June 1-5pm. (There is also the opportunity to be an Artist in Residence for the week!) As well as being a Monday class outing, anyone is welcome, whether you are a regular or haven't been for ages. If the weather is good, we can spread throughout the churchyard and Memorial Gardens, if wet, we can be accommodated inside the church, where there are also lots of interesting details to sketch. I am not charging for the afternoon as I won't be teaching as such, but donations to the church fund would be most welcome on the day.

Please email me if you are interested so that I can send further details when they have been arranged.

Exhibition info...

St Giles' Church was the inspiration for Gray's "Elegy in a Country Churchyard" and his final resting place. His tomb is in the churchyard and a memorial stands in neighbouring Gray's Field. The church congregation and the Stoke Poges Society are collaborating to celebrate his legacy with an exhibition of art depicting Thomas Gray himself, his memorial or tomb or closely linked to the Elegy. Work is welcomed from local artists, alive or not, alongside antique prints or originals and we would love people to spread the word so that we get as wide a variety as possible.

As this is not a sale of work, there is no charge to exhibit but current artists may display contact details with the artwork if they wish.

More details and an Exhibition Entry Form can be found on the church website www.stokepogeschurch.org/thomasgray

What's the difference between a class and a workshop?

Art Classes are held each week during term time. You can start at any time in the term, come to as many classes as you wish and just pay as you go or pay for the term in advance to get a special rate. Each student brings their own image or photo to work from (I can offer some examples for beginners) and continues the same painting each week until it is finished (or you fancy a change!). Most people work in acrylics but please contact me if you would like to learn another medium. Everyone works at their own pace - some might have time to paint at home between classes, others may only make an occasional class.

Materials are charged separately. You can purchase a starter kit for around £25 (sold at cost, so prices can vary), which includes paint, brushes and your first canvas. You can also bring your own materials, or you can pay a materials fee of £5 per class.

Painting Workshops are single sessions, where the aim is to complete a painting by the end of the session and all materials are included. Ideal if you want to try out painting or have limited opportunities to attend.

My new "In detail" workshops in 2020 will explore a theme using several different references and mediums (such as pencil, paint and pastel) to sharpen observational skills, copying exactly what you see, not what you think you know! You will NOT take home a finished painting, but a series of sketches and studies demonstrating that no two objects are really identical and that we all have our own style. All materials will still be included in these sessions.

Private Group rates are available for both classes and workshops or book me to come to your venue. Please contact me about rates, venues and painting subjects for your group. Easily accessible from Slough, Gerrards Cross, The Chalfonts, Amersham, Beaconsfield and Uxbridge.

Gift vouchers for classes and workshops are available. Please contact me to arrange these.
